Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards

On Monday night (28 January), watched by audiences in 47 African countries, the nominees for the first-ever AfricaMagic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCAs) were revealed during a special edition of lifestyle program53 Extra. Held in association with MultiChoice, and headline sponsor Amstel Malta, the AMVCAs recognizes and rewards excellence in African film and TV.

Announcing the nominees were stylish Eku Edewor and Dolopo Oni, joined by Jara co-hosts Uti Nwachukwu (Big Brother All Stars winner) and Helen Paul, Biola Alabi (M-Net Africa MD), Femi Odugbemi (AMVCA Executive Judge), Lizz Njagah (Kenyan soap and reality star) and Edem Vindah (Media and Public Affairs Manager, Nigerian Breweries PLC). Also in studio was the elegant AMVCA trophy!

Encompassing 28 awards in 26 categories, the AMVCAs includes 6 categories where viewers will vote for winners and 18 more technically focused categories where winners will be selected by an expert industry based judging panel (judges will be announced at a later date).

This judging panel will also select the rising star TrailBlazer of the Year, and the Industry Merit recipient, a veteran industry professional whose long term contribution will be honored.

And ensuring the awards specifically recognize outstanding achievement, the AMVCAs did not name nominees in two categories (Best Documentary and Best Online Video) as the nominee selection team had preferred to award certificates of encouragement instead to all entrants.
However, the focus of the night was the nominees and leading the way was South African hit Otelo Burningwith 14 nominations while Nigeria’s brilliant The Mirror Boy grabbed 11, just in front of Man on Ground, another powerful Nigerian offering which garnered 9 nominations.

Unless You are Cossy Orjiakor, Protect Your Vagina

Ever since the Nollywood actress who is famous for displaying her nudity to the glare of the public took her fun or whatever-she-might-call-it to a different level with her recent totographics (a term she coined) on twitter, I had refrained from commenting or treating her desperate attempt for attention as a bizarre act by a normal being because she is not normal.

She has not been normal since she was thrust upon the public from the first time I watched her on Agatha Amata's 'Inside Out' Show on MBI were she told the audience, and viewers at home, that she had been raped sometime in her life as she defended her indecent dressing and claimed she was secretly wooed by the same men who condemn her in public.

I remembered that voice of hers, somewhat timid for someone who wasn't timid at all, and who had an air of 'I-don't-give-a-damn' or in the Nigerian parlance 'I-no-send-you' attitude. She still isn't timid, if anything, she has grown bolder or bitchier.

Sometimes I wish she were as successful in her acting as she is with her pornographic displays online, however, that is Cossy Orjiakor, and no one can do her better than she.

Growing up in the midst of friends who knows how to yab (google it) and whose yabs had the strength of ripping you of your self-esteem, I learnt very early that the best form of defense is attack, by 'attack' I mean attacking yourself before others have the chance to do so. By the time they attack you, the impact of their attack will wield little or no damage at all just like most popular and ugly looking comedians, like Basketmouth and Akpororo does. I feel Cossy too has mastered this craft, and nothing anyone has said has had any impact on her yet. But this article isn't really about miss I-no-send you.

It's about a certain girlfriend of a colleague of mine, and every other girl who are equally foolish as the said girl.

I use 'foolish' because, either out of love or sheer joy of getting a good fuck from a certain guy who is a friend as well to this colleague of mine, she allowed the man take pictures of her naked body, most especially her vagina, and with her face showing in it.

Probably she thought her sex partner might delete it later or keep it to himself. Wrong, she was so wrong because the man showed those pictures to my friend to consolidate his 'bragging rights' on how he dealt with her on the bed.

These are acts that may seem innocent at the time but may boomerang in future, I mean the girls future, either as some important man's wife, or as an important society woman. So unless you are Cossy Orjiakor, learn to protect your vagina. It's only Cossy that can do something like this and get away with it.

A Breath of Fresh Air: Papa Sam

Some people are born with talents, others have it thrust upon them. Babatunde Samuel, a.k.a. Papa Sam, second runner up, Next Movie Star (2013), falls in the first category.

I met him for the first time in my hundred level in the university. I didn't just want to have an 'only book affair' memory and needing a creative exercise I had joined one of the most popular group on campus ELSA Play House (English and Literature Students Association) and auditioned for a role in a production of theirs, Obaseki, written by Don Pedro Obaseki, during the second semester of the same year. That was when our paths crossed for the first time.

Like me, he wasn't studying English and Literature but our talents made it possible for our admission as members of the creative group. He was already a student of the university before I gained admission, and an older member of ELSA Playhouse, so I didn't know much about him, except that I thought he was carefree and unserious with his lackadaisical attitude during rehearsals. At that time too, I thought he didn't know how to act because he was just not serious at rehearsals, but I was mistaken. On the second night of the performance on that big stage, being watched by students, lecturers, lovers of theater, and visitors from the city, this unserious dude exuded a different kind of energy in his performance as one of the key characters and antagonists to Obaseki, a display I hitherto hadn't see him exhibited before. I was impressed, and my respect for him began to grow.

He wasn't the star for that night, as the best performance was unarguably the preserve of the dude that played Obaseki, but he was a favorite that night. What I didn't know was that he was saving the best for the last. I mean we had a second play, Our Husband Has Gone Mad Again, written by Ola Rotimi, that was to be performed the next day and Papa Sam was to play the lead. We had a fuller hall that day, and this somewhat unserious acting dude stole the night leaving people reeling in laughter, and value for their money.

After that episode he proved himself, over and over again, as an actor and a director. Simply put, he has art running in his veins. I know the next question is if he is that good why haven't we heard about him until now. The answer is that I have no idea, at least now you are hearing about him.

When he told me that he had entered for NMS, being a comrade in the entertainment business, and someone who is convinced he would do great things in the movie world, I not only applauded his moves, but supported him believing he'd steal the show. Yes, he stole the show, I mean the Next Movie Star Reality Show, but not the crown. Since the show wrapped he's been on one production set to another.

Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you Papasam, as he climbs the ladder of fame to becoming the next big thing. Tweet at him via @papasamm

AMANPOUR TALKS TO JONATHAN ON CNN

When I heard Amanpour would interview President Jonathan yesterday, I didn't show any interest because of two things; power failure, and the same 'old story' but, while I was surfing for tutorials on editing, later, in between checking for updates on the always 'dramatic twitter' I stumbled on tweets by those who watched it accusing Jona of telling lies in the interview and not answering the questions intelligently like he ought to have considering being the most powerful man in Nigeria.

Not one to conclude a matter on mere hearsay's, I decided to look for the video online, and see for myself. I got a link on Amanpours website and I laughed silently as I watched the president of Nigeria's lips quiver  from cold (or is it the snow at the background) as he answered her questions defensively.

ASIDE: Watch and decide the truth for yourself.

HERE ARE SOME OF THE INTERESTING COMMENTS I GOT ONLINE:

On Twitter:

Kudos to President Goodluck Jonathan for a superb & brilliant interview with Christiane Amanpour. What a scholar and gentleman! *goosebumps*

BUHARI AND THE PRESIDENCY

Former Head of State and three time Presidential candidate, Maj.-Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), has said the ongoing merger talks by the major opposition political parties will determine if he will run for president in 2015.
Buhari said this in Abuja on Wednesday while fielding questions from reporters after inaugurating the Congress for Progressive Change Merger Committee.
The 18-member committee is saddled with the responsibility of having talks with the Action Congress of Nigeria on the proposed merger.
He explained that the CPC would first conclude discussions with the ACN after which talks would be initiated with the All Nigeria Peoples Party.
“We have written priority (with ACN) and we are going to go into discussion with ACN before we move to the other party,” the former Head of State told the journalists.
Buhari, however, assured, “It is not impossible that the new party is presented to the people of Nigeria by the middle of this year.”
The Katsina State-born general, who acknowledged the fact that he had said he would not run for the office of the President again, having failed to win the election three times, said he would wait for the outcome of the merger talks before giving a definite answer.
He said, “For the umpteenth time, I said it (that I won’t run again), it is on record that I would not present myself again for election.
“But after that, I have said so many times that members of my party and groups went and said that I don’t belong to myself and that I belong to them. They also said they belong to me.
“I asked them to go and organise the party and if you approach me I may consider it. This is the stage we are.
“I mentioned it several times and I’m waiting on my party and if we have a merger, it will make things much easier for me. The new party will then decide whether it will offer me its ticket and it is up to me to consider accepting it or rejecting it.”
While inaugurating the committee, which has a former Deputy Governor of Bauchi State, Alhaji Garba Gadi, as its chairman, Buhari said personal interest should not stand in the way of a great opportunity to build a better Nigeria.
This, he said, would happen once the CPC, ACN and ANPP came together as one party.
He said, “The issue before you now and as you go into your negotiations is fundamentally one – that you will negotiate the best deal for Nigeria.
“It is essentially a matter of give-and-take. There is nothing sacrosanct about any of the issues you will be called to thrash out, but of course, there is a bottom line, the outlines of which have been given in the committee’s terms of reference.
“Your task is national. Petty personal interest should not stand in the way of a great opportunity to build and run a better Nigeria, which will happen once CPC, ACN and ANPP come together.”
Buhari told the committee not to take the negotiations as a battle, saying it was a friendly game with fellow brothers who he said, desire the nation for what people like him also desire for the country.
He said the country was at a crossroads, stumbling from one disaster to another “simply because its leaders lack purpose.”
The former Head of State regretted that the opposition had also not been able to get its act together because its leaders had refused to unite.
“In Nigeria today, therefore, unity – unity of people, unity of political parties, and unity of the opposition is no longer an option. It has become a national imperative,” he added.
Buhari said it was a great joy to know that the leaders of the two parties were eager to merge, adding that the sentiment in the country was for full merger and not alliance or electoral understanding or anything of sorts.
According to him, “What Nigerians want is merger and that is what you are going to negotiate and bring home to them.”
He said the work of the committee would be simple because there was already in existence, an unexecuted understanding between the CPC and ACN for the creation of a new party, with a brand new logo and a new flag already designed and all other paraphernalia of a political party put in place.
All these, according to him, should be dusted off and built upon to avoid time wasting.
The committee, he said, should be able to finish its job in six weeks before the two parties would now constitutionally seal the merger in another six weeks.
Buhari said the new party should actively support the restructuring of the country, adding its 36-state structure was not working.

ASIDE: My only grudge with this man is his desperation to become a civilian president at all cost, and why he thinks himself the political messiah we've been waiting for. How can you trust the words of a man who cannot keep his own words? Time will tell if he's the one for Nigeria or not.

My Dear; CNN HEROES AWARD, with love from America

Ten great and inspiring men and women were recognized during the 2012 CNN Heroes of The Year Awards. According to Copper Anderson the compere of the event, these people against all odds have touched lives of the helpless and voiceless in their society.

As I stayed glued to the TV all through the ceremony, I was moved by how these great men and women have changed their society. For some of them their personal grief challenges became a reason to change lives
for good.

Thulani Madondo, from South Africa grew up in a ghetto and saw how many young people lived an unfulfilled live but was determined to give hope to the next generation of young people.

Malya Villard-Appolon from Haiti, a mother who was abused at a refugee camp after the Haiti earthquake, decided to speak up against domestic violence. 'Many women have been raped, beaten by men. I can’t watch and see all these continue against women. I decided to mobilize women and speak to them. This has helped them gained their self esteem that was lost due to these abuses'.

Wanda Butts a Black-American mother lost her teenage son Josh, who drowned. Wanda mourned her son day and night for a year but decided to immortalize his memory. She started teaching children how to swim because she believes that black American children are more vulnerable to die by drowning because they are hardly told about drowning by their parents. The fear associated to drowning, she has eliminated in the lives of thousands of young children.

Leo McCarthy lost his teenage daughter Mariah, to a careless drunk young truck driver. His fourteen year old daughter was killed by a drunken truck driver and in her memory he set up a foundation. The Mariah Challenge encouraged young Americans not to consume alcohol until they are twenty-one years old and can be more responsible for their actions.

The overall winner was Pushpa Basnet a twenty-nine year old from Nepal that give care to children of women serving jail term in Nepal. Pushpa said she did not want the children to be jailed with their mother but wanted them to experience freedom. Pushpa has a home that accommodates hundreds of these children. She provides education, feeding and shelter for them. Pushpa said she is inspired as these children spend the best parts of their childhood before her watchful eyes.
All these inspiring people from different parts of the world are giving meaning to lives. What is that dream of change that you have? Why not start something today.

My Dear Carbon-loving Nigerians, with love from America ...

Carbon emission is responsible for the changing climate and its effect that has resulted in terrible weather condition in the last quarter of 2012, from hurricane sandy in New York, to crazy freezing temperature in Russia which reached minus fifty in some poor region in one of the coldest parts of the earth.

I had a discussion with my cousin in the United State and was shocked at what she told me. Amaka Okoye a Nigerian, who has lived in the United States for about four years, and who is hosting me for my duration in this land of opportunities told me ninety percent of Nigerians living in the United States are sick. She said most Nigerians that migrated from home to settle in the US have one sickness or the other.

“…they have high blood pressure” These she attributed to our feeding pattern that has carbohydrate as its backbone. Most people consume eba, rice, yam, bread which are all staple food but very high in carbohydrate.

Amaka explained that when you stay in the US, you have to undergo basic health check. This health check is to help determine your health status. But back home Nigerians undergo health check when they are sick. This non-challant and ignorant attitude she observed has led to many premature deaths in recent time.

‘ … People die anyhow in Nigeria for minor reasons. Do you know before someone has type ll diabetes in the US, it would have been detected? Do you know many Americans survive cancer? But at home cancer is a death sentence’

She expressed anger at how Nigerians accumulate carbon in their body.

‘We need to check what we eat. Nigerians love carbon. We are blessed with nutritious fruits and vegetables that are very natural’

In the US some of these fruits are genetically modified and could be harmful to the body. But in Nigeria, we have very natural fruits growing. We should include that in our diet. I am coming back home next year but I have bought almost what I will eat in Nigeria here in the US.

Amaka also talked about our palm oil consumption. According to her palm oil is very rich in cholesterol. The cholesterol level in palm oil is very high. For me that was like a shocker because I have heard a lot of people saying palm oil contain vitamin A, which is good for the eyes. I remember the different “mama put” kiosk in Lagos and the amount of palm oil in their pots of soups.

Nigerians do we really love carbon saturated food? High level carbohydrate in the blood and body, scientist said leads to diabetes, obesity and other disease conditions. I believe the carbon level in an average Nigeria meal should be traded in the international carbon market.

How much carbon do you consume? Eat wisely today for a healthy body.

Yours sincerely,

Tina Armstrong (From America).
